Commissioner of Revenue Tax Relief & Exemption

There are several tax relief and exemption programs available for those who qualify. A quick summary of each program is provided below. Applications can be found here.

Real Estate

  • Tax Relief for the Elderly and/or Disabled - This program is available for taxpayers who are living on a limited income and over the age of 65 or totally and permanently disabled. The applicant must meet additional financial worth criteria. This program awards qualified applicants with up to $1,600 off of their real estate tax bill.
  • Tax Deferral for the Elderly and/or Disabled - This program is available for taxpayers who are living on a limited income and over the age of 65 or totally and permanently disabled. The applicant must meet additional financial worth criteria. This program defers all taxes of the qualifying property. All deferred taxes plus interest are due within one year of the applicant's death.
  • Disabled Veteran Exemption - This program is available for disabled veterans. To qualify, the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's certification form from the United States Department of Veteran's Affairs verifying that the applicant has been awarded 100% service-connected, permanent and total disability. Personal Property

  • Military Exemption- Active duty military personnel with a legal residence other than Virginia are exempt from the personal property taxes and registration fees.
  • Relief for Fire, Rescue & Auxiliary Volunteers - This program is available for individuals who are considered a "volunteer" and an "active member" of the county fire-rescue department or volunteer 15 hours per month as an auxiliary/reserve sheriff's deputy.
  • Disabled Veteran Exemption - This program is available for disabled veterans. To qualify, the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's certification form from the United States Department of Veteran's Affairs verifying that the applicant has been awarded 100% service-connected, permanent and total disability.
