Prevent Drug Abuse/Protect Communities
This new program provides the office with a method to assist citizens with the proper disposal of unused or expired prescription narcotics. Our office has a number of these packages that allow the citizens to place the prescription narcotics into the package along with water and the ingredients are rendered safe for disposal.
COPSync (Coming Soon)
This program will be instituted very soon and is a joint venture between the school system and this office. This system will provide immediate notification regarding any suspicious activities at or within our schools to include but not limited to active shooter or intruder incidents. This system will allow real time information to be provided to first responders via text or email and will allow the emergency communications center to relay information in an immediate fashion. School staff can disseminate real time information as they see it take place to the Emergency Communications Center and to individual first responders to include descriptions, locations, and numbers of suspects and/or students/staff affected.
Citizens Sheriff Academy
A program designed to maintain an open dialogue with the citizens of our community and to provide them with some insight as to the operation of this office and the reasons for certain actions and concerns. This will be a 14-week program with the instructors being members of this office and other resource agencies who partner with this office.
Shield (Coming Soon)
Program to allow quick dissemination of information concerning incidents across the globe to individuals or organizations that have been vetted to provide an opportunity to deter or prevent similar activities in our community.
This office does have a Twitter account which is used to make others aware of non-emergency information that may affect our community or of events which have or will be taking place. This also allows the sharing of information from and with the community.
The Sheriff's Office has a Facebook page that allows this office to share information online in a social media platform. This gives our community an avenue to communicate with this office and to be informed of events in our county or information regarding this office or our community.
Triad Program
The Chickahominy Area Triad is a program that focuses on the needs and security of our senior community. This program includes the law enforcement, social service agencies, community members and community resources, local government and seniors, all working to benefit the senior community.
Safe Exchange Zone
We have established a safe exchange zone at the Sheriff's Office which allows for an environment where individuals can meet to exchange items traded/sold online or to complete custody exchanges. The objective is that the individuals involved would be under video surveillance at the Sheriff's Office. The possibility of a law enforcement officer being readily available in the event of an issue may deter any conflict or other criminal activity.
Worship Watch
The electronic communications network with county churches to facilitate the sharing of information regarding trends in the community, crime patterns in the area and to allow the churches to share any information or concerns that they may have with this office in a timely fashion.
Community Advisory Panel
A panel of five citizens has been meeting to provide information to the Sheriff as to the needs/concerns/desires of the citizens of our county. The members were chosen for their good standing in the community with one from each magistrate district. One of the members was appointed by the New Kent Clergy Association. Each of these members has been provided business cards by the Sheriff and as they meet with citizens they can provide them any assistance on behalf of the Sheriff and bring him their concerns. The members attend events with the office and/or on behalf of the Sheriff.
Fingerprinting/Issuance of Precious Metal and Gem Permits
Members of this office will schedule appointments to fingerprint individuals who are in need of fingerprinting in relation to an application for a county precious metal and gems permit.
Fingerprinting for Federal Firearms License Applications
Members of this office will schedule appointments to fingerprint individuals who are in need of inked fingerprints in relation to their desire to submit an application to the ATF.
Fingerprinting of Citizens for Employment
Members of this office will schedule appointments to fingerprint individuals who are in need of inked fingerprints in relation to employment or an employment application.
Fingerprinting for the Department of Social Service and Foster Parents
Our office completes the fingerprinting process for this county agency. This allows for the submission of fingerprints to be used as a portion of the background check on personnel involved with the foster parenting program.
New Kent Alert
This is a telephone/text/email notification system that New Kent citizens can opt into on the county website. Once in the system, notifications regarding various types of situations will be disseminated as requested.
Fingerprinting of School Personnel and Volunteers
This office completes the fingerprinting process for the county school system. This allows for the submission of fingerprints to be compared to local, state and federal arrest files. These are used as a portion of the background check on personnel involved with the school system as school employees or volunteers.
Fingerprinting of Park and Recreations Personnel and Volunteers
Our office completes the fingerprinting process for this county agency. This allows for the submission of fingerprints to be used as a portion of the background check on personnel involved with these programs.
Adopt-A-Pet Program
The personnel at the animal pound have a tremendous program that is run in conjunction with the New Kent Humane Society. This program allows our pound to foster or adopt out almost every stray animal brought to the pound. This program has benefited hundreds of animals and pet owners across the region.
College Internship Program
This office accepts college internship applications on a continual basis. This program exposes college students to the various aspects of law enforcement. This includes experiences in court, civil process, patrol, investigations, administration, animal control, communications, crime prevention, and the accreditation process.
Special Olympics
The Sheriff's Office assists with fundraising for the Virginia Special Olympics and participates in the annual torch run in which law enforcement and community runners carry the torch west on Route 60 after receiving it from James City County personnel at our eastern border and then turn it over to personnel from Henrico County at the western border.
National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative (twice a year)
This office in cooperation with the DEA establishes locations within the county to collect unused and out-of-date prescription narcotics. The narcotics are transported to a secure location and they are then destroyed by the DEA. This normally takes place in April and October. Once a date is set we will post the next upcoming drug take back opportunity on the main page of the Sheriff's Office website.
Project Lifesaver
The Sheriff's Office has a number of certified technicians who can fit an individual who is in need of monitoring with the Lifesaver wrist or ankle bracelet and operating the receiver unit. This allows the unit to be tracked by a specific radio receiver and assists searchers in their efforts to locate the individual in the event they are reported missing.
Trigger Safety Lock Program
This office will disseminate trigger/gun locks when they are available to the Sheriff's Office. There are a number of resources available to us in this area.
Internet Safety
Our office will conduct presentations on various internet concerns and how to maneuver on the internet or social media safely.
Identity Theft Prevention
The Sheriff's Office can discuss the trends in the region, how to prevent identity theft and how to address the issue if you are a victim of identity theft.
Child Safety Programs
This office has numerous child safety programs to include presentations on firearms safety, stranger danger, latch key kids, drugs and alcohol awareness, domestic violence concerns, home safety, personal safety, internet and social media safety, bicycle safety etc.
Bullying Prevention
This office will conduct informational presentations in a classroom environment or in a group setting on the topic of bullying prevention and how to deal with a bully.
Directed Patrols
The Sheriff's Office offers an intense surveillance of areas of concern for traffic violations which are reported to this office or in locations where deputies may have noticed traffic issues.
Charity/Scams/Fraud Prevention
This office will conduct presentations to any size group concerning the current scams or methods being used to attempt to defraud citizens in the area. This will include ways to identify a scam, how to avoid being victimized and what to do if you become a victim.
S.T.A.R. Progam
Sheriff's Telephone Answering Response Program. This program was established to assist citizens who are in need of daily contact. The majority of the participants in this program are seniors who live on their own but feel more comfortable if they are contacted daily by someone. The on-duty communications officer will place a telephone call to the program participant's home at the requested time of the day or night to check on the senior. If there is no answer or if there appears to be an unusual issue, a deputy and/or fire-rescue will be dispatched to the location. While first responders are enroute the communications officer will be attempting to make contact with the listed point of contact for the senior, which is normally a family member or a friend. In addition, the communications center will continue to make contact with the citizen by telephone. If there is no contact, and upon arrival there is no contact made from outside the home, forcible entry may be made to ensure that the senior is not in need of medical attention.
Funeral Escorts
The Sheriff's Office will provide assistance with the movement of funeral traffic to include escorts and/or traffic control.
Traffic Control for Special Events
The Sheriff's Office will assist with traffic control for some special events. There may be a charge for this service dependent upon the time that must be dedicated to the event.
Gun Safety Education
This office conducts concealed carry training classes to assist those interested in learning more about the proper manner in which to carry a concealed weapon or who are making application for a Virginia concealed carry permit. This office is available to make presentations on gun safety to groups within the county to include a variety of ages. This may include the distribution of gun safety locks if these are available.
Drug and Alcohol Awareness
Our office will make presentations on these topic areas to school groups to include in assemblies or in the classroom environment. In addition members of this office are available to attend group meetings throughout the county to discuss these topic areas and may be accompanied by subject matter experts.
Child Safety Seat/Seat Belt Education
Our program is dedicated to the proper installation of and uses of the appropriate child safety seat device or seat belts. Members of this office are trained in these areas and coordinate inspections and installation of child safety seats of all types.
Bicycle Safety Education
The Sheriff's Office provides information and can assist with activities centered on bicycle safety and the proper use of safety equipment. This includes the proper and safe manner to operate a bicycle and the laws regarding the operation of a bicycle.
Business Watch
The business watch program provides contacts with the county businesses at various times of the day at the request of the business. This will include making contact with the business during business hours to ensure the safety and security of the business and its employees.
Neighborhood Watch
The New Kent Sheriff's Office assists neighborhoods in establishing Neighborhood Watch programs in an effort to make the community aware of the safety and security needs. In this program this office provides assistance and guidance in establishing and maintaining a watch group. This office will assist with special events and with obtaining resource materials for the watch groups.
Property Checks/Watch Orders
This office offers these services to all residents/businesses of the county. A citizen can request a property check/watch order be placed on their home or business by contacting the communications center. Upon the issuance of the request the deputies will visit and monitor the property as often as possible on each shift. The intent is to be visible and to identify any problems discovered.
Church Security Surveys/Assessments
This service allows the citizens/churches within our county to request one of our trained deputies to visit their facility and to conduct a survey of the property. This survey will be summarized in a report which will include recommendations from this office regarding opportunities to increase the security of the observed property. These surveys will include an assessment of the lighting, landscape, exterior security and interior security to include locks on windows and doors, money movement, member/congregation security, other points of access, alarms if any, line of sight issues and other areas of concern.

This service allows businesses within our county to request one of our trained deputies to visit their location and to conduct a survey of the property. This survey will be summarized in a report which will include recommendations from this office regarding opportunities to increase the security of the observed property. These surveys will include an assessment of the lighting, landscape, exterior security and interior security to include locks on windows and doors, money movement, employee security, other points of access, alarms if any, line of sight issues and other areas of concern.

Media Relations
This program includes providing weekly press releases to the local media regarding activities in New Kent County. This includes the preparation of press releases for local, regional and national news outlets depending upon the scale of the event.
Speaker's Bureau
The Sheriff's Office has a number of personnel who are available to speak to groups concerning topics of interest to the community. These topics include but are not limited to personal safety, child safety, prevalent scams, identity theft, drug and alcohol awareness, traffic safety, home and business security, internet safety, etc. Members of this office are willing to modify or research items of interest to allow presentations in areas not in our normal scope of activity.
Operation Kid ID
This program is tailored to provide parents with methods of positively identifying their children in certain situations. These methods may include fingerprints/DNA samples/photographs. The package has space for the inclusion of other vital information about their children along with information which suggests methods to recognize and deter threats to the safety of our children. This service can be requested for groups of youngsters at a particular event or for a single child to be completed within the home or at the Sheriff's Office.
