Lead and copper sampling request

New Kent Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is seeking participation from customers in Five Lakes & Kenwood Farms subdivisions regarding our need for Lead & Copper sampling sites. Specifically, owners of structures built before 1983, with copper piping and/or lead solder.

From responses received we will develop a list of primary & alternate sampling sites for future sampling events. Sampling assistance from the customer will be needed, including a six-hour “no flush” retention time, which is best accomplished overnight. Completed & signed paperwork is also required.

The next sampling event for these subdivisions will be in late summer 2018. Sampling occurs every third year. Individual results are reported back to the property owners. System results are reported in the Annual Water Quality Reports.

New Kent DPU is fortunate that our water systems are not of an age to have lead service lines or other major components, however, materials containing lead and/or copper do still exist in the distribution system as well as customer plumbing systems. In the wake of the Flint, Michigan lead crisis new regulations are anticipated, along with increased oversight of the sampling program and process.

DPU has approved sampling plans for all its water systems and has not received any violations regarding lead & copper sampling procedures or results.

**Customers attempting to fax Lead & Copper Sampling Site surveys, please note the fax number provided in the letter sent to homes is incorrect. The correct Public Utilities fax number is 804-966-7135.
