New Kent County bridge named after Trooper Pilot Berke M. M. Bates

The Airport Road bridge over Interstate 64 was recently named for the late Trooper Pilot Berke M. M. Bates, who was one of the two troopers killed last year in Charlottesville at a protest rally.

Bates, who was a New Kent County resident, and Virginia State Police Pilot Lt. Jay Cullen were both killed when their Virginia State Police helicopter crashed into a wooded area on August 12, 2017 as they made their way to provide security watch for the motorcade of then-Governor Terry McAuliffe.

“It is very fitting that the Trooper Pilot Berke Bates Memorial Bridge will be the path for pilots on their way to the New Kent Airport,” said County Administrator Rodney Hathaway. “We hope that the people of this County will see his name and that his legacy will live on.”

Senator Thomas K. “Tommy” Norment, requested the bridge naming on behalf of the Virginia State Police. The sign was installed on July 18, 2018.
